Outside the Walls

He will swallow up death forever; and the Lord GOD will wipe away tears from all faces, and the reproach of his people he will take away from all the earth, for the LORD has spoken. It will be said on that day, “Behold, this is our God; we have waited for him, that he might save us. This is the LORD; we have waited for him; let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation.” —Isaiah 25:8-9

Waiting is not something we find easy, is it? Our anxiety mounts in direct relationship to the sense of anticipation and apprehension we have about an event or circumstance. Our view of and attitude toward God reflects this. So when we read Isaiah 25:8-9, it serves as a life-changing reminder.

When our frustration at waiting overflows, we tend to press on without whoever, or whatever, we are waiting on. We take matters into our own hands. The same is true of us spiritually. “Waiting on the Lord” happens best when we remember that “we have a strong city” (Isaiah 26:1) God has made a place for you not just to be but also to belong. Through Jesus, walls of salvation have been constructed around us. But when we take matters into our own hands, we effectively look for such security outside the walls that God has provided for us. We leave our “strong city.”

Lack of patience is diagnostic of a loss of peace. God invites you to find a home, a haven, and a harbor in Him. “You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you” (Isaiah 26.3). He keeps means that God guards, watches, and preserves that peace. Can you imagine that? God, whose words created the world, watches over the chaos of your world.

Today, what are you making your home? You have a strong city—come home. Make His faithfulness your foundation. Every day the thing that determines how you respond to what life throws your way is the question of whether or not you trust God.

With my future.
With my family.
With my finances.
With my fitness.

Someone once said, “In adversity we usually want God to do a removing job when He wants to do an improving job.” Seizing moments to trust God give momentum to living for God. Today you CAN be bold in your belief that He is better. God gives us eternal promises that include this very day. The things He promises forever include the right now. Draw near to Him afresh with a readiness to place your life in His hands. Remind yourself every morning, “God is an everlasting rock” (Isaiah 26:4). He is not moving or weakening or breaking. He is mighty and willing and building. —Scott Hamilton

Journal:

·         When I list the circumstances creating anxiety in my life, what am I believing about God in each of these circumstances?

·         How can I seize moments to trust God today? What does that look like?

Prayer: Father in heaven, I have seen You act and move in my life in many ways, yet I struggle with trusting You in these circumstances. I read that You create for me a “strong city,” yet I keep walking out of those gates of protection and take matters into my own hands. Forgive me for this, Lord! Give me the strength to trust only in You and not my own desires. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
