Give Him Your All
By Skip Heitzig

I talked about worship in this space last week, but there’s more I wanted to say. Real worship involves the emotions. I like the word “passionate.” Real worship is passionate. When you worship God, give Him your all.

Look at the worship in heaven in Revelation 5. “I heard the voice of many angels around the throne, the living creatures, and the elders; and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands, saying with a loud voice: ‘Worthy is the Lamb who was slain to receive power and riches and wisdom, and strength and honor and glory and blessing!’” (vv. 11-12).

The picture I get is of a crescendo of sound. And I could be wrong, but it seems like God is into volume. The worship is loud, and verse 13 says that everybody is involved. You could say, “I’m not a good singer.” Well, that’s not the issue! It’s not about us! I had a camp counselor who said, “God gave you a bad voice? Give it back to Him!” Your voice, given to you by God, is an adequate instrument to worship Him. The Bible says, “Sing unto the Lord.” It also says, “Make a joyful noise.” Anybody can do that. I’ve watched kids do that who can’t carry a tune, but they are so happy!

But here’s the idea. There should be emotion and passion in your worship. Jesus said you are to love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength (Mark 12:30). Put yourself into it. When you sing, sing like you mean it. I know people are wired differently. I even used to say this myself: “I’m just not an emotional person.” I beg to differ. You might not be an emotional person when you’re singing worship, but you’re an emotional person. When you got that birdie on the golf course, or when your team scored, you jumped up and you shouted. When your kids received that award, you got excited. I guess it all just depends on what you’re excited about.

Why is it that we think that enthusiasm for the most worthy thing in all of the universe must somehow be carefully contained? Do you think God looks at us when we hold it all in and says, “Way to keep it all inside! Way to show nobody that you love Me”? Everyone loves it when we show emotion in our love for them, and so does God. I know we’re all different, we’re all wired differently. Some are more expressive than others. I’m just saying that whoever you are and whatever your makeup is, please give God your all. He is worthy!
