2 Corinthians 8:9

For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sake He became poor, so that you through His poverty might become rich.

It’s inconceivable for someone to do what Jesus did for us!

Jesus didn’t give up being God to become a man, but it was as if He did. All the things that brought Him glory as God the Son, the second person of the Trinity, were set aside by His choice. His limitless power that had created the universe (John 1:3), gone (John 4:6); His command of the angels of heaven, set aside (Mt 26:53); His overwhelming presence that brought awe and worship to all who were exposed to Him (Rev 1:17), cloaked by His humanity.

Jesus knew that one day that glory would be restored to Him. At the end of His time on earth, He prayed: “Now, Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was” (John 17:5). Knowing all that had been His would be His again must have made Jesus’ time of struggle on earth even more difficult to bear.

What would make someone give up so much and enter a life of suffering for the sake of people who didn’t even appreciate Him? The answer: “God so loved the world…” (John 3:16).

That same Jesus is reaching out to you today. Don’t you want to know Him better?
