Living Biographies

“You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.”

—Matthew 5:14

One of the greatest arguments for the Christian faith is a transformed life. When someone believes, they become one of the greatest advertisements God could have. Their lifestyle changes. Their attitudes change. And even their physical countenance will change. Jesus said that we are the light of the world. He also said we are the salt of the earth (see Matthew 5:13–14).

There is a place to let our lights shine and proclaim the truth of God. Have you found it to be true that when people know you are a Christian, even when you haven’t pushed it on them, you seem to be a walking light bulb? When a coworker is getting to the punch line of a dirty joke and you suddenly appear, he says, “I will finish the joke later.” It was not like you marched in and yelled “repent!” He simply knows you are a Christian.

There is also a place for us to be salt. In ancient times, salt was used to preserve meat. The meat was kept viable by the salt. So when Jesus said we are the salt of the earth, He was essentially saying, “Christian, you are here to keep things from going completely wicked. You are here to be a godly influence for Me.”

Salt was also used to stimulate thirst. If you are being a “salty” Christian, so to speak, you will, by your lifestyle, stimulate a thirst for God in others. They may laugh at you and make fun of you at times, but they will watch you.

The greatest biography of Jesus is written in the words and actions of His people. They are His living biography.
