No Secrets

[Jesus] had no need that anyone should testify of man, for He knew what was in man.

—John 2:25

I remember when my son Christopher was a little boy, he would try to hide something from me.  He would say, “Dad, guess which hand it is in,” as he held his hands in front of me.

I would say, “Buddy, you should put your hands behind you,” because I could see his secret sticking out of his hand.

That’s how we are with God: God, I bet you can’t find this sin.  I bet you don’t know this about me.  God sees it as clearly as I saw what was going on with my son.  He sees right through us.  When God looks at us, we are transparent to Him.  We have no secrets from God.

John’s Gospel tells us, “Now when He was in Jerusalem at the Passover, during the feast, many believed in His name when they saw the signs which He did.  But Jesus did not commit Himself to them, because He knew all men, and had no need that anyone should testify of man, for He knew what was in man” (John 2:23–25). He knows what is in you, and He knows what is in me.

It all comes down to the sincerity of our hearts.  God wants you to be honest.  He wants you to tell the truth.  He knows everything about you.  He knows whether you are sincere.  If you are playing a religious game, if you are just fooling around, then God will know that. But if you really want to know Him, then He will reveal Himself to you.
