Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

--Philippians 3:12-14

The apostle Paul said the meaning of life was the pursuit of Christ. And Paul focused on that goal with incredible intensity.

So often we don’t win in life because we don’t know the difference between what is good and what is best. There are many good things we can do, but God has called us to higher things, to the better things, to the best things in our lives. And we need to do those best things, rather than being constantly distracted by our own over-commitments.

In Hebrews 12:1, the writer encourages us to “lay aside every weight”…to take off the things that drag and pull us down.

So what is slowing you down? Working too much? A hobby? Channel surfing? A sin? Maybe it’s just a distraction that’s keeping you from focusing on God because you don’t have the time to spend with Him. Is there something in your life today that’s causing you to take your eyes off the prize?

Every successful person has a focus in life…and they opt for the best things over the good things. I hope today you’ll lay aside your weights, you’ll focus on the best things…the things of God…and that you’ll press toward the prize of your calling in Christ!

make the focus of your life the best things…the things of god!
