And he said, “Throw it on the ground.” So he threw it on the ground, and it became a serpent, and Moses ran from it. But the LORD said to Moses, “Put out your hand and catch it by the tail”—so he put out his hand and caught it, and it became a staff in his hand….

--Exodus 4:3-4

If you’ve ever found yourself completely dependent upon God, not knowing which way to turn, congratulations! That’s exactly where Christ wants you to be.

The reason is that when we are at this point of desperate dependence, we’re ready to follow and obey God, no questions asked.

Moses put his life squarely in God’s hands when God told him to pick up a live, slithering snake. God instructed Moses to throw down his rod, which turned into a snake, and then pick up the snake by the tail.

When Moses did that, it became a rod in his hand. If anyone else had tried to pick up a snake by the tail, they probably would have had a very nasty surprise!

Why did God ask Moses to risk his life? Because God wanted Moses to demonstrate his complete dependence upon Him. Moses had a stick in his hand, but God wanted him to obey Him and throw it down to teach Moses not to depend on anything but God alone.

We all carry things in our hands, so to speak, that can hold us back from totally depending upon God. It may be our possessions…or other people…but whatever it is, we need to let go of them. We need to “throw them on the ground” and let God use them as He sees fit.

What are you holding on to today for security? If it’s keeping you from depending on God, I challenge you to throw it down and put your complete trust in Him.

Have you COME TO THE POINT OF COMPLETE DEPENDENCE UPON GOD?
