Therefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

--1 Peter 1:13 (NKJV)

The Scripture is full of great word pictures. And in this verse, we are told to “gird up the loins of your mind.”

Long ago, the ancients wore long flowing robes tied with a belt. And if they needed to run or move quickly, they would pull their robe up between their legs and tie it with their belt. This way, they wouldn’t trip when they ran.

What the Scripture is telling us in the verse above is that we can’t allow any loose edges in our thinking if we want to live a holy and godly life.

So often today, believers simply think about the wrong things. We dwell on things that don’t produce a holy life. Maybe you worry too much about what other people think. Or maybe you have a problem with lust. Or maybe you covet what other people have.

Whatever it is, let me warn you today: Loose thinking produces loose living!

Hebrews 12 tells us to “lay aside every weight [thought], and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus….”

Today, determine to set your thoughts on Jesus Christ, not the things of this world. In doing so, you’ll begin to live a life that’s holy and pleasing to Him!

make a commitment today to discipline your mind to focus on Christ.
