Sensing the divine through conscience

April 21, 2011

For when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law.

Romans 2:14

Have you ever seen a pig pray? Probably not. Have you ever seen a dog worship? I highly doubt it!

You see, animals have no real self-awareness. Animals don’t sit and think about their place in the universe. They don’t wonder if there is life after death. And they certainly have no awareness of God.

God made man with the unique capacity to know him. And that’s one of the greatest pieces of evidence of God’s existence. The wisest man in the Old Testament, Solomon said, “He has put eternity into man's heart” (Ecclesiastes 3:11).

We know that we were made for something beyond ourselves because we have a conscience. We know intrinsically what’s right and what’s wrong. Even little children are able to pick up on that.

The Navajo Native Americans put it this way: In every human heart there’s a triangle that spins when we do wrong. And the corners of that triangle cut the heart and prick the conscience and it causes us pain.

But it’s possible in this world to have the light of conscience and yet refuse that light and be plunged into the darkness. But through conscience, every person is given some light of the divine, which serves as evidence of their Creator.

EVERY PERSON CLAIMS THAT RIGHT AND WRONG EXIST BECAUSE OF THEIR CONSCIENCE. SO AS YOU SHARE CHRIST WITH OTHERS, HELP THEM UNDERSTAND THAT CONSCIENCE IS EVIDENCE OF A DIVINE CREATOR.
