Sensing the divine through creation

April 22, 2011

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.

Genesis 1:1

It’s a reality in our world today that much of evangelism is spent debating the foundational assumption that God exists.  But it’s interesting that the Bible never argues for the existence of God. The Bible asserts God and assumes God. It begins with the sublime, but simple words, “In the beginning, God…!”

As you read the Scriptures, you’ll find no philosophical argument for God. Why? Because you can’t find God in a syllogism. It is impossible for any line of reasoning alone to lead anyone to a belief in God because God will always be explained away by the mind that refuses to believe what it cannot see.

Then why, in the history of anthropology, has there never been a people group discovered who are inherently and historically atheistic? I’ll tell you, because people do see God in the evidence of the things that he has made—his creation!

The Bible only gives one half of one verse to the atheist, “The fool says in his heart, ‘There is no God’” (Psalm 14:1). It’s saying that any person can look at the things that God has made and know that he exists!

Everyone in the world has some spark of divine belief by simply looking at creation. So when you interact with those who don’t believe in God, remember that even if they don’t acknowledge him, they have a sense of him through what he has made. So love them and trust God to do the rest!

EVEN THE STAUNCHEST ATHEIST HAS SOME BELIEF IN THE DIVINE. SO AS YOU SHARE CHRIST WITH THEM, REMEMBER THAT CREATION HAS SPOKEN TO GOD’S EXISTENCE FIRST!
