What exactly is the church?

August 28, 2012

And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.

Ephesians 1:22-23

Many years ago, a steeple was being raised on a brand new church as the people of the town looked on. And as the steeple was being set in place, the pastor of that church, his mouth wide open, said, “Wow! Look at that steeple.”

A little girl tugged at the pastor’s coat. As he looked down at her, she said, “Pastor, remember: it’s not the steeple, it’s the people that make up the church.” That little girl taught that pastor a very important lesson: the church isn’t a building—it’s the people of God gathered together to bring glory to Him.

As Christians, we shouldn’t be like the fellow who, when he was asked his church preference, wrote, “Red brick.” No, the people of God must understand the church is much more important than that. It’s a group of people who care for one another, grow together in the grace of God, and make an impact for Jesus Christ wherever they are.

Don’t just go to church. Be the church! Fellowship regularly with other believers who will care for you, help you grow in your faith, and who will be coworkers in taking the Gospel to the world!

THE CHURCH IS A GROUP OF PEOPLE WHO CARE FOR EACH OTHER, GROW IN CHRIST, AND IMPACT THE WORLD. SO DON’T JUST GO TO CHURCH, BE THE CHURCH!
