Experiencing victory over your sinful nature

December 31, 2010

For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out.

Romans 7:18

As a believer in Jesus Christ, you have three enemies that affect your spiritual life: There's the world that puts pressure on you to conform to its image. There's the devil, that strategic foe that comes against you spiritually. And, there's the flesh.

Now what do we mean when we say ‘flesh'? Some think that the flesh is the physical body, but that's not really what the Bible means. As a matter of fact, the Scripture is clear that the believer's body is the temple of the Holy Spirit!

But beyond the physical body there is the flesh principle. And the flesh the Bible refers to is the inherent sinful nature of all people. It's what we are in our unsaved condition. And yet, even when we come to Christ, our sinful nature doesn't disappear.

Because of this, you and I both have an enemy within us. Paul's struggle in Romans 7 is between following the spiritual, Christ, and following the flesh, his sinful nature. And while the flesh can't be completely eradicated in this life, you can be victorious by living in the Spirit and obeying the will of God!

Do believers sin? Yes, but they are no longer slaves to sin. And by the power of the Spirit, you can experience victory over your sinful nature every day!

TO BATTLE THE SINFUL NATURE INSIDE YOU, FOLLOW CHRIST DAILY AND OBEY GOD'S WILL.
