Making an eternal impact with your momentary life

January 3, 2011

Come now, you who say, "Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit"— yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. Instead you ought to say, "If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that." As it is, you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil.

James 4:13-16

Life goes by so quickly, doesn't it? An old friend of mine said it best when he told me, "Life is like a roll of toilet paper. The closer you get to the end, the faster it goes!" I remember when I was younger and a year seemed like forever. But now, it's like January 1st comes earlier and earlier each year!

The Scripture confirms this truth in today's passage where you and I are called a "mist." Now, what does that mean? Well, simply put, our lives are a momentary flash in the grand scheme of eternity. Our time on this earth is as temporary as a morning fog that burns off as soon as the sun rises.

But don't be deceived into thinking that your vapor of a life can't make an eternal impact! While your life is short, God wants to use you to make a difference for his Kingdom. He's given you the very important responsibility of loving him and leading others to him.

So as you enter a new year, be reminded of the brevity of your life in the face of eternity. But also, be encouraged that this life isn't all there is! And let that create in you a sense of urgency for leading others to Christ.

LIFE IS SHORT, BUT YOUR LIFE CAN MAKE AN ETERNAL IMPACT WHEN YOU LIVE IT OUT IN CHRIST!
