Using your freedom for God's glory

January 31, 2011

"All things are lawful for me," but not all things are helpful. "All things are lawful for me," but I will not be enslaved by anything.

1 Corinthians 6:12

It seems so many people today are always looking for loopholes in the law. Near the end of his life, the comedian W. C. Fields, who wasn't a Christian, was flipping through a Bible one day. A friend came up and asked him, "What are you doing looking through the Bible? You're not a religious person."

Giving a wry grin, Fields replied, "I'm looking for loopholes."

Now unfortunately for W.C., there are no loopholes in the principles of God's Word!

You and I live under the grace of God and not under the law. We've been completely liberated from legalism! But the fact that we've been liberated from legalism does not give us license to live however we please. In our freedom, we are bound to a higher law.

As a believer in Christ, you're committed to a greater calling: to follow Jesus Christ. So you must always ask yourself, "Is what I'm about to do purposeful?" Yes, under the grace of Christ you have so many freedoms. But when you abuse the very freedoms God has given you, it shows where your true loyalties lie.

So as you embrace your freedom in Christ, do so knowing that with that freedom comes great responsibility. And "whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God" (1 Corinthians 10:31).

IN CHRIST, GOD HAS GRANTED YOU ABUNDANT FREEDOM. YOUR RESPONSIBILITY IS TO USE THAT FREEDOM TO GLORIFY GOD!
