What a friend you have in Jesus

January 7, 2011

He entered Jericho and was passing through. And there was a man named Zacchaeus. He was a chief tax collector and was rich. And he was seeking to see who Jesus was, but on account of the crowd he could not, because he was small of stature. So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him, for he was about to pass that way. And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, "Zacchaeus, hurry and come down, for I must stay at your house today." So he hurried and came down and received him joyfully.

Luke 19:1-6

One of the most enjoyable things to do when you go to the land of Israel is to go to Jericho and see the ancient sycamore trees. And you can't help but wonder which tree it was that Zacchaeus climbed to look for Jesus.

To most people in Jericho at this time, Zacchaeus was more of a nuisance than anything else. Jewish tax collectors were seen as sellouts, people who could make a lot of money working for Rome and ripping off their kinsmen. No one wanted anything to do with them.

No one, that is, but Jesus.

The crowd had gathered and pushed Zacchaeus out of the way. So he shimmied up that tree and he was looking for the Lord Jesus. And as Jesus passed that way, to the amazement of that little, lonely man, Jesus stopped, looked up at him, and called his name! Zacchaeus must have thought to himself, "He knows my name!"

Isn't that wonderful about our Lord? God knows you and he knows me. He knows the very hairs of your head; they're numbered by him.

No matter who you are or what you've done, the best friend you can ever have is Jesus Christ. He loves you so much that he died on the cross for you. So spend time with him every day in prayer and in God's Word.

WHEN OTHERS REJECT YOU, JESUS ACCEPTS YOU. SO CLING TO HIM EVERY DAY!
