Are you lighting a light?

July 14, 2011

“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.”

Matthew 5:14

I remember that when I was a little boy, there was a religious program that would always come on TV. It was one of the original religious broadcasts of the 1950s and it was with a Catholic bishop by the name of Bishop Fulton Sheen. That old black and white television would come on before Bishop Sheen and it always showed a candle. And the voice of the announcer said every week, “It is far better to light a light than to curse the darkness.”

That’s a great truth for us to remember. It can be easy to look at the world today and become cynical. Christians often talk about how bad the world is and how much better things were when they were younger. But as you and I look at the darkness of our world, we need to make sure that we light up our lights!

Now, I’m not talking about being a self-righteous do-gooder who rubs his good works in the face of all the ‘sinners.’ What I mean is letting others see the life of Christ expressed in your everyday behavior.

When people look at you, do they see you putting others first? Do they see your love for God? As you live your life, remember to be sure you are lighting a light rather than just cursing the darkness.

INSTEAD OF JUST COMPLAINING ABOUT THE STATE OF THE WORLD, LIVE YOUR LIFE IN SUCH A WAY THAT YOU BRING LIGHT TO THE DARKNESS.
