Clinging to the promise of victory over sin

November 4, 2011

We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. For the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God.

Romans 6:9-10

Back in the early nineties, there was a popular song by Billy Joel where he was relating the events of the last generation from the fifties to the sixties to the present day. The chorus goes,

“We didn’t start the fire.
It was always burning
since the world’s been turning.”

And when you think about the curse of sin, Billy Joel is exactly right. The fire of sin that was set in the hearts and lives of men centuries and millennia ago is still burning. And as inheritors of that sin, we sense its heat and feel its pain.

For every tragedy and every painful experience of life, sin can be pointed out as sin because sin is deadly and destructive. Yet, it’s ironic that in today’s world, so many people miss the ugliness of sin and take the attitude, “I’m okay. You’re okay.”

Sin is the disease of the mind. It is the cancer of the soul. But Christ came to redeem you and me from the curse of sin so that one day everything would be made right. But until that day, hold onto the promise He’s given us that the sin of the world has been overcome by His death and resurrection!

SIN IS THE WORLD’S MOST DESTRUCTIVE FORCE. BUT BECAUSE OF CHRIST’S DEATH AND RESURRECTION, YOU CAN HAVE FULL CONFIDENCE THAT IT’S BEEN DEFEATED!
