When God calls you out of your comfort zone

October 14, 2011

Peter said, “… In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk!” And he took him by the right hand and raised him up, and immediately his feet and ankles were made strong. And leaping up he stood and began to walk, and entered the temple with them, walking and leaping and praising God.

Acts 3:6-8

Orel Hershiser is known as one of the great pitchers of all time, as well as a Christian. After he was honored as the most valuable player of the World Series, Johnny Carson brought him on the Tonight Show.

As they were talking, Johnny Carson showed him a clip of the final game when the camera zoomed in on Hershiser on the bench. He had his eyes shut and his mouth was moving. So Carson asked, “What were you doing there?” And Orel Hershiser said, “Well, I was a little uptight, so I was just singing.” Carson asked, “What were you singing?”

And the great pitcher said, “Well, ah… it’s a little song that we sing at church called The Doxology.” Carson said, “Well, sing some of it for us!”

So with his voice cracking and breaking he began to sing,

Praise God from whom all blessings flow.
Praise Him all creatures here below.
Praise Him above ye heavenly host.
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

That night, Orel Hershiser silenced the audience as he turned that studio into a holy sanctuary for a short moment. Often God calls you and me to do something out of the ordinary to give others a glimpse of Himself.

So if God’s calling you out of your comfort zone, as He called Peter to heal a crippled man on a busy street, listen and follow. He might just use that to give someone else an eternity-changing glimpse of Himself.

FOLLOW GOD WHEN HE CALLS YOU OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE BECAUSE IT MIGHT JUST CHANGE SOMEONE’S ETERNITY.
