The dangers of ‘knowing’ the Bible

September 24, 2012

“But the one who hears (my words) and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the stream broke against it, immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great.”

Luke 6:49

Perhaps you've heard that old story of the actor who came home to visit his church in England. The pastor of the church asked him to get up and recite a piece of Scripture because his voice was so eloquent. So the actor stood up and recited the 23rd Psalm, “The LORD is my shepherd...” with a clarity and passion rarely heard.

Then the old white-haired pastor of that church stood up and preached a message on that psalm.  But before he preached it, he quoted the Scripture once again. When the pastor was finished with his message, the actor stood to his feet and said, “I know the psalm; that man knows the Shepherd.”

Many people today know the Bible. You can find biblical scholars in universities all over the world who know what the Bible says. But when it comes to knowing the Shepherd of the Scriptures, the number of those who actually believe the Bible is dramatically less.

One of the biggest pitfalls I see among many Christians is that they “know” the Bible, but they don’t believe it. So read the Scriptures and apply them to your heart and your life. You’ll find that the more you immerse yourself in the words of the Bible and find life in them, the stronger your spiritual walk will become!

DON’ T JUST “KNOW” THE BIBLE, READ IT AND APPLY IT TO YOUR LIFE, AND YOU’LL STRENGTHEN YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH CHRIST.
