A Faithful Team

2 Thessalonians 1:1-2

Having faithful brothers traveling with you and serving the Lord is one of life’s greatest gifts. Bill went with me early last summer to Kenya and the Lord powerfully used not only his testimony as a naval officer but also as a public-school administrator in the lives of the Kenyans we met both in Kakamega and Webuye.

Dan traveled with me to Albania soon after the Berlin Wall came down and Eastern Europe opened up to the Gospel. He and his wife, Jeannie, are went with us in Israel. Both these couples have been our friends, faithful brothers and sisters who serve with us for years—nothing quite like it. And as we open to Paul’s second letter to the Thessalonians he makes sure we know that his faithful team is right there with him in Corinth.

“Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy to the Thessalonian community of faith in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: grace and peace be with you from God, our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.”  2 Thessalonians 1:1-2

Paul doesn’t want us to forget that God is our Father through our faith in Jesus. Note how he repeats both “God, our Father” and “our Lord Jesus Christ,” and how he places Jesus on an equal footing with the first person of the Trinity. Paul loves to remind believers that God is their personal Father (cf. Rom.1:7; 1 Cor. 1:3, 2 Cor. 1:2) and that Jesus is divine, our Savior, and the Messiah. And of course, as in the intro to 1 Thessalonians, his greeting reminds us that our peace with God is all because of Christ’s grace.
