Don’t Get Taken Out of the Race

Galatians 5:7-12

The Kentucky Derby, the first leg in horse racing’s Triple Crown, is full of tradition, southern charm, beautiful hats, and the best Thoroughbreds in the world. Remember when Maximum Security, the pre-race favorite, crossed the finish line first, but then was disqualified.

With only 35 seconds left in the race, Maximum Security suddenly moved several places across the track impeding the path of War of Wills. Replay clearly showed that it was a foul, Maximum Security was disqualified, and Country House, a 65-1 horse, was declared to be the winner. The betting community is not happy, but the stewards stuck to their decision. It was a dangerous move. Horses and jockey’s lives could have been in jeopardy, and most of the racing professionals agree that it’s wrong to cut in and impede those who are running in the race.

The Kentucky Derby officials refused to be interviewed and explain their decision, but when the Apostle Paul saw false teachers cutting in as his spiritual children were running in the race of life, he didn’t go silent. He wrote a letter to them that has been read by millions explaining how serious the foul against the Galatian churches was. In today’s section he exposes that the false teachers cut in on the race, and he even gets emotionally intense as he confronts those making dangerous moves in Galatia.

“You were running well! Who cut in on you and hindered you from obeying the truth? Their persuasive teaching does not come from the one who calls you. A little yeast permeates through the entire batch of dough. I’m confident in the Lord that you will not take another view (begin to think salvation is by works and not by faith). Now the one who is throwing you into confusion will pay the penalty for it, whoever he may be. Realize the contradiction of what they are telling you. Brothers and sisters, if I’m teaching that you have to be circumcised, then why am I still being persecuted? If I taught like that, the scandal of the cross would be eliminated. As for those who are throwing you into confusion, I wish they would go the whole way and castrate themselves!” Galatians 5:7-12

Maximum Security didn’t intentionally cut in and his dangerous move didn’t cause any life-threatening incidents, but the false teachers Paul was exposing were intentional and their moves could have cost lives in Galatia and beyond. That’s why Paul got angry, and connected their insistence about circumcision to the more extreme surgery of castration

The argument was all about circumcision, but If a man gets castrated, he can no longer give the gift of life. Paul wants the Gentile Galatian believers to know that if they get circumcised, if they add obedience to the Jewish law, rites, and traditions as necessary to stand right before God, they would destroy the only message that can bring new life to dead sinners.

LORD, down through Church History false teachers have tried to cut in and destroy the Gospel of grace through faith alone. Thanks that you have always sustained a remnant who understand and believe Paul’s clear teaching about the Gospel of grace in this book and live it out in their lives.
