Keep Pressing

1 Thessalonians 4:1-2

Have you noticed that the great coaches when interviewed at the half in the mandatory interview with the ESPN reporter never say, “That’s perfection! My team can’t play any better. They’re incredible!” No, they might be winning by forty points, but you’d think they were behind. They point out a weakness on defense or a block that was missed. Why? Because they know that complacency leads to defeat.

To win in athletics you’ve got to keep pressing or the opponent will seize the momentum, and the Apostle Paul knew that the same was true in our walk with Jesus and our struggle against Satan. Listen to Paul’s half time interview in the book of Thessalonians as he urges his spiritual children to remember what he taught them when he was with them and to keep pressing.

“Finally, brothers and sisters, we keep on asking and exhorting you in the Lord Jesus that just as you received from us how it is necessary for you to walk and to please God, that you abound in this even more. For you know what instructions we gave you through the Lord Jesus.” 1 Thessalonians 4:1-2

In tomorrow’s Devo the Apostle Paul gets very specific about God’s will for us and then gives us some instruction that contradicts major voices in our culture.

LORD, thanks that walking to please you means we press harder to stand firm in our faith in the Lord Jesus in spite of intense pressure. It means we abound even more in loving one another, and we keep comforting those in danger of losing hope. The Lord Jesus is coming back and when he does, he will set things right.
