Peace! Be Strong Now

Daniel 10:15-11:1

Have you ever had the wind knocked out of you? You try to suck in air and there is nothing. Watching football, we’ve all seen the most powerful men lying helpless on the ground as the trainers come, kneel down, and render aid. I’ll never forget the relief that came when a trainer reached down and lifted me so the air could rush back into my lungs after a linebacker had hit me hard.
A linebacker didn’t hit Daniel. He was knocked down by the majesty of a mighty heavenly warrior. Gabriel and Michael are two of God’s warriors, and together in Daniel’s vision they work to bring him the word about the transfer of power from Persia to Greece, and then later in the vision the conflict between Egypt and Syria over who would control Israel. The angel begins helping Daniel catch his breath.

“While the angel was speaking with me according to these words, I bowed with my face to the ground and was speechless. Then someone who looked like a human being touched my lips. I opened my mouth and began to speak. I said to the one standing before me, ‘Sir, because of the vision incapacitating tremors have come upon me and I’ve lost strength. How can I, your servant, my lord, speak with you, my lord? My strength is gone and I can hardly breathe.’

So again the one who looked like a man touched me and strengthened me. He said, ‘Don’t be afraid. You’re highly favored! Peace to you. Be strong. Be strengthened.’ When he spoke to me I was renewed and said, ‘Speak, my lord, for I’m strong enough now.’

So he went on, ‘Do you understand why I’ve come to you? Soon I will return to fight against the prince of Persia. I will move into action and then the prince of Greece will come.  And when I go, the prince of Greece will come, but before I depart I must first tell what is written in the Book of Truth. No one stands with me against them except Michael, your prince. And in the first year of Darius the Mede, I took my stand to give him strength and protect him.”  Daniel 10:15-11:1

If we have any doubt about our Father’s power, the very sight of his warriors knocks Daniel flat, prone and unable to speak. Thank God the angels were on Daniel’s side, and the strongest man on earth needs to take a hard look at what Daniel saw. They might humble themselves and wise up before it’s too late. When we get the wind knocked out of us in life, we can hear not just one of his servants, but the Spirit of Jesus himself says, “Peace,” and we can be strengthened. And as we struggle to separate the fake news from the true, we can still count on what the angel is going to reveal to Daniel as true.

LORD, thanks that you give us the Book of Truth, and that you’re not guessing about the future because you’ve written the script. Give us peace and strength as your treasured children today.
