The Man Desired by Women

Daniel 11:37-39

In his Old Testament, God chose to center his redemptive narrative on a woman’s passion to bring the great male child into the world, the Son, the Deliverer who would crush the Serpent’s head (Genesis 3:15). In the Christmas narrative, Elizabeth revealed that every Jewish woman’s hope had finally been fulfilled. When she saw the pregnant Mary, she cried out, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you bear. But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?” (Luke 1:42-43).

Hundreds of years before, Daniel had predicted that God would give a Son, the “rock cut out of the mountain without human hands” (Daniel 2:44), the ”Son of Man coming with the clouds of heaven” (7:13), and the “Anointed One” who would be “cut off” to atone for our sins (i9:25). Now in chapter 11 Daniel speaks about the Man “desired by women,” the Man the Antichrist will despise.

“He will show no regard for the gods of his fathers or for the one desired of women, nor for any god. Indeed, he will make himself great bragging against all gods. He will worship power, giving honor to fortresses, military might, even a ‘god’ not known by his ancestors. He will honor this god with gold and silver, precious gems, and all kinds of valuables. He will attack the mightiest of fortresses with the help of an illegitimate god, and greatly honor those who acknowledge him. He will make them rulers of many and parcel out the land at a price.” Daniel 11:37-39

Whether it’s godless men, like Stalin and Hitler in the last century, or contemporary rulers who boast in their military power and material wealth, we must never give our allegiance to anyone filled with themselves instead of humbly bowing before the true God. We must learn from history and remember that godless pride and trust in man always lead to the murder of millions. There is still a powerful world ruler to come who will defy God, but we must give all our devotion only to the One Bach praised as “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring.”

LORD, I praise you that Jesus is the God-Man who women can always trust, the One who will bring justice and who will overpower the final rebel against God. Precious Jesus, the Desired of women, you are my joy and I can hardly wait to celebrate your birthday.
