The Son of Man

Daniel 7:13-14

Playing the role of King George in the blockbuster hit “Hamilton,” Jonathan Groff sings ironically about his love for the Colonies. He pictures them as a lover who has gone away, but claims this rebellious, runaway woman will be back. Here’s the line that caught my attention,

“Oceans rise, empires fall

We have seen each other through it all

And when push comes to shove,

I will send a fully armed battalion to remind you of my love.”

In the Revolutionary War, Britain sent far more than an armed battalion, but at Yorktown they were defeated. Spin time forward 160 years to World War II. When Hitler was seeking to slit the throat of the British Empire, it was their former Colonial subjects who came to the rescue. Now the stormy, chaotic jostling among the nations continues. How is this ruthless, bloody game of King of the Mountain among the nations going to end?  Daniel’s vision in 553 BC, the first year of King Belshazzar’s rule over the city of Babylon, gives us the answer.

“In my visions of the night I saw, ‘Look, with the clouds of heaven there came one like the Son of Man. He approached the Ancient of Days and was presented before him. And to him dominion was given, and honor, and a kingdom that all peoples, nations, and tongues should serve him; his dominion is eternal, never taken away, and his kingdom will not be destroyed.’”  Daniel 7:13-14

During Jesus’ ministry his favorite title for himself was “Son of Man.” It stresses that he was fully human, the perfect image of God in flesh. In his first coming his humanity meant that he got hungry, tired, and died a gruesome death. But we must never forget that he is also the second person of the Trinity who has stood forever face to face with his Father, the Ancient of Days. And Jesus told us that he would fulfill Daniel’s prophecy even before the cross, “For as the lightning comes from the east and shines as far as the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.” Matthew 24:27

LORD, Daniel has exposed the pride, lying, infighting, and ruthless violence of the world empires. Here he shows that you will not allow this rebellion to win. I bow the knee before your Son today; create in me the characteristic of his eternal kingdom.
