The Temple and the City Destroyed
The debate still rages over who has the right to Jerusalem, and if you go to Israel with us March 7-17th on our Truth Encounter Holy Land Tour, you can experience the push and pull over this city for yourself. We will see the retaining wall built by Herod the Great so he could expand the Temple built in the time of Ezra and Nehemiah.
Today the plaza is dominated by the Dome of the Rock and the al-Aqsa Mosque completed by the Umayyad Caliphs in AD 692. The area was clear because the Romans under Titus burned the Jerusalem Temple to the ground in AD 70. Daniel predicted this destruction 608 years before the Roman legions overwhelmed the Jewish defenses, and Jesus reemphasized Daniel’s prediction of the destruction of the Temple during the week before he was cut off in the crucifixion (Mark 13:2, Matthew 24:1-2) Jesus emphasized that this was only a foreshadowing of a final tribulation time that would culminate in the end of our present age.
“After the sixty-two sevens, the Anointed One will be cut off and will have nothing. And the people of the ruler who is coming will destroy the city and the Holy Place. Its end will come with a flood, and to the end the struggle of war with its devastation is decreed.” Daniel 9:26
I remember in the early 90s when the Berlin Wall had fallen and the Cold War ended with the proclaimed victory of democracy there was talk of beating our swords into plough shares. But then 9-11 happened and it was obvious that Gabriel was right and Jesus was right when he told us that there would be wars and rumors of war until the end. But our great hope is that Daniel has already told us how it will end. God will put his Prince on the throne in Jerusalem and this great hope helps us to be realistic about the present conflicts, but to also be the peacemakers Jesus commands us to be.
LORD, from Syria to the southern Philippines, from Nigeria to Honduras, major and minor battles are being waged. Continue to use your people to meet the needs of refugees and use your children to bring the hope that only your Son, the true Messiah, can bring into lives.
