Today's Scripture
"But I wish everyone were single, just as I am. Yet each person has a special gift from God, of one kind or another."   1 Corinthians 7:7 NLT

Thoughts for Today
Some singles see themselves as second-rate. Instead of valuing each day as a gift, they are "passing time" until they marry. However, we can see in today's scripture that the apostle Paul viewed singleness as a positive. Whether you are single just for now or single for a lifetime, try to discover the positives in singleness.

Paul says your singleness is a gift from God whether it is temporary or permanent and is to be used in service to him. Despite what the world suggests, and the church often echoes, God has not chosen the married lifestyle as the only normal way to live. He does not consider single life as second best.

Consider this …
Do you ever struggle with feelings of worthlessness or shame because of your singleness? Or perhaps you see yourself simply as a person who has been rejected. If so, you likely think God doesn't need you and cannot use you. God created each of us for a purpose and promises to fulfill that purpose if we move past our feelings of insignificance and allow him to work in and through us.

Furthermore, because we are united with Christ, we have received an inheritance from God, for he chose us in advance, and he makes everything work out according to his plan.
Ephesians 1:11 NLT

This week we will look at some of the positives of singleness and how we can begin focusing on becoming all God has designed us to be.

Prayer
Father, help me not to put my life on hold while I am single. Help me make the most of each day. In Jesus' name . ..

These thoughts were drawn from …The Single Christian: Living as One in a World of Twos by Dr. Elizabeth Holland. In a world where everyone seems to have a mate, it is difficult to live life as a single person. Whether you have never been married, are divorced or are widowed, this study is for you. In The Single Christian, Dr. Holland examines many of the different facets of singleness, from rejection; bitterness and unforgiveness; loneliness; to dating; single parenting and the positives of being single. Note: This curriculum was written especially for small groups, and we encourage people to use it that way. However, it can also be used effectively as a personal study for individuals.
