The glorious days of David are gone, and the only thing remaining is a stump. When the words of this verse reached the ears of King Herod 700 years later, he thought it was a joke. Herod’s intellectual acumen led him to the conclusion that God couldn’t bring life out of a dead dynasty such as David’s. Yet, the prophet’s words were fulfilled. One night in Bethlehem, Mary and Joseph were elected by God as key pieces in His grand game of chess.
