John 1:6-8

“There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness, to bear witness about the light, that all might believe through him. He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light.”

You too have been sent from God to bear witness about the light (Jesus)!

God’s purpose for John the Baptist was to fulfil prophecy as the major announcer of the arrival of Jesus the Messiah. His whole life was about pointing people to Jesus. When he spoke about Jesus to his disciples, John said, “He must increase, and I must decrease.” When John’s disciples got upset that more people were following Jesus than were following John, John replied that this brought him great joy.

The way God works out his purpose through you will be different than it was through John. You may not be fulfilling major Old Testament prophecies and announcing the incarnation of Jesus. Nevertheless, you carry the same purpose as John.

Today God is reminding you that you don’t just exist as a Christian in your circumstances. No, you have been sent into your circumstances to represent Jesus!

Think through the day before you. Whose life is God sending you into? How can you bear witness about the Light?

Prayerfully personalise today’s Scripture as your commitment to respond to God’s purpose for your life. Write your name in as God’s witness:

There was a man/woman sent from God, whose name was _________________________. He/she was sent as a witness, to bear witness about the Light—Jesus.
