A Safe Place
Have you ever felt threatened by something or someone? When was the last time your heart pounded with fear and your mind raced with anxiety about some situation that loomed over your life?
We all need a safe place to run at times like these. We need a place where we can be protected from imposing and threatening circumstances. While there may not be a physical place of security we can run to, there is a spiritual refuge that is always available to us.
The Old Testament king, David, was very familiar with threatening situations. He spent many years of his life under the dark cloud of King Saul’s jealous pursuit. Saul was determined to kill David, but God protected him. Later in life, King David’s reign and life were threatened by his own son, Absalom, who wanted his father’s kingdom for himself. And again, God brought David through, safe and secure.
How did David handle times like these? Where did he get the strength and security to keep going under such ominous circumstances?
David ran to God for comfort and security. When threatened and fearful, David turned to the Lord and trusted Him for protection and preservation. Jehovah God was David’s mighty fortress, his special, personal place of refuge.
Take a look at one of the prayers David prayed during a threatening time in his life:
"O Lord, I have come to you for protection; don’t let me be disgraced. Save me, for you do what is right. Turn your ear to listen to me; rescue me quickly. Be my rock of protection, a fortress where I will be safe. You are my rock and my fortress. For the honor of your name, lead me out of this danger. Pull me from the trap my enemies set for me, for I find protection in you alone. I entrust my spirit into your hand. Rescue me, Lord, for you are a faithful God." — Psalm 31:1-5 (NLT)
What threatening situation are you facing? Are you feeling anxious and afraid about something? Do you need a fortress, a refuge, a place of safety and security?
The Almighty God that helped David will help you. Run to Him. Call on Him. Let David’s prayer become your prayer. And remember, the Lord brought David through, He’ll do the same for you!
