There is a very interesting scripture in the Bible where Jesus rebukes the people for their failure to recognize the real issues at work in the world. It is found in the Gospel of Luke 12:54-56, “Jesus said to the people: As soon as you see a cloud coming up in the west you say, ‘It’s going to rain’ and it does. When the south wind blows you say, ‘It’s going to get hot’ and it does. Are you trying to fool someone? You can predict the weather by looking at the earth and sky, but you don’t really know what’s going on right now.”

Many of the people Jesus spoke to were fishermen or farmers quite skilled in understanding the weather. They knew when different weather patterns indicated changes were coming. But they did not detect the momentous changes coming from the message Christ was bringing to everyone. I can’t help but wonder if all these years later the same thing is happening again.

There is nothing wrong with knowing what is going on with the weather. One of our pastors has a real interest in the weather but he also is very interested in what God is doing. How many are up on all kinds of current affairs? They know about what is happening in Washington - what the president is proposing, what the Congress is debating. But do they know what God is doing? Are they aware of the work God wants done?

Many are quick to know how the winds of change may be blowing at their job. But what about how God’s purposes are being accomplished in our world? Do they know what part God wants them to play in his plan? How many are very knowledgeable on the latest gossip about celebrities yet are ignorant of what the Lord is doing right in their own community and church?

There is nothing inherently wrong with an interest in politics, the economy, public opinion or Hollywood. But only if it is secondary to your understanding of what God’s Word has to say about your work, your relationships and your spiritual life. If as much energy and thought was put into familiarity with God’s work as is put into all the other interests we might have a very different situation in our lives and in our culture today.

God is always at work in our world. He wants us to join with him to establish His kingdom. Being sensitive to His leading in our lives and aware of His will is what should matter most.
