Trusting in the good shepherd

December 14, 2010

I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.

John 10:11

Perhaps, you've heard that old story of the stage actor who came home to his church in England and was asked to read the 23rd Psalm to the congregation. So he got up, walked to the front, and solemnly began, "The Lord is my Shepherd…" He recited the Psalm with such elocution and dignity that the people in the church stood to their feet and applauded when he finished!

The old white-haired pastor of the little church came to the front to preach a message on that Psalm. But before he preached it, he quoted Psalm 23 with even more passion and love than the actor did. After he finished, you could hear a pin drop in the church.

So the young actor stood to his feet and said, "The difference in my recitation of the Psalm and that man's is that I may know the Psalm, but that man knows the Shepherd."

In the ancient world, the role of the shepherd was to guide and protect his flock from danger at all costs. And looking down the corridor of time from eternity past, God knew that mankind was going to put itself in danger because of sin. So he sent Jesus to lay down his life for you and me to protect us from receiving that judgment we deserve.

As you go through your life, is Jesus your shepherd? Do you allow him to lead and guide you? Have you believed and trusted that he died for you? God loves you. And the only way you can truly love him is by following the shepherd he sent, Jesus Christ.

JESUS IS THE GOOD SHEPHERD WHO DIED FOR YOU. ALLOW HIM TO GUIDE AND PROTECT YOU DAILY.
