Bill is one of the strongest men I know. With his own hands he helped Mary and I build our first home, digging the trenched for the plumbing, framing up the walls, and staying with the project all the way to sheet rock and finish molding.
Mary recently was in the surgery waiting room with Joann, Bill’s wife, while they amputated his left foot trying to save his life from the infection that had invaded his toes. As we grow older infections so easily come and invade these bodies, weakening them, and eventually sucking away all the life.
Daniel’s last recorded vision can give us hope:
“Now on twenty-fourth day of the first month, as I was standing on the bank of the great river Tigris, I lifted up my eyes and there, look, before me was a man dressed in linen, with a belt of refined gold around his waist. His body was like Spanish topaz, his face like lightning, his eyes like flaming torches, his arms and legs like polished bronze, and his voice like the roar of a multitude.
I, Daniel, was the only one who saw the vision; the men with me did not see it. They were overwhelmed with fear, fleeing and hiding themselves. I was left alone, taking in this great vision. My strength drained away. My face turned pale. The vision left me helpless. Then I heard the voice speaking and when I listened to the voice I fell into a deep sleep, my face to the ground.
Look, a hand touched me and trembling I rose to my hands and knees. He said, ‘Daniel, you are greatly favored, carefully think about the words I’m about to speak to you. Stand up, for I’ve now been sent to you.’ When he said this to me, I stood up trembling.” Daniel 10:4-11
Most episodes in God’s Story involve human beings, like us, but there are times when God opens the veil between heaven and earth and sends one of his mighty angels to connect with one of his servants. Daniel was one of these servants, and he describes the best he can what an angel’s body looks like. Note especially that the angel had two strong legs, gleaming like polished bronze.
One day Jesus promises to give us not only two strong legs, but a body even more powerful and mighty than this angel’s in Daniel’s vision. My dear friend Bill might be missing a foot for a little while, but not forever.
LORD, give me the eyes of faith to believe that Daniel did get a glimpse of the glory, radiance, and power of an angelic body and presence. And to think that these might creatures are sent not only to serve Daniel but all of us who trust in the Lord Jesus. “Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation.” (Hebrews 1:14) Give my precious friend Bill strength today.
