Shortcuts
Pastor Mark Jeske

“This time it’s different.” You and I can rationalize almost anything with those words. We can ignore time-tested principles of investment to make risky bets. We can trust the wrong people with our business and savings.

How tempting it is to take forbidden shortcuts when God is just not acting in a timely manner! King Saul had marshaled Israel’s troops for war with the Philistines, but the prophet Samuel was not showing up to offer sacrifices to the Lord. Saul was neither priest nor Levite and knew that he had no business acting like one. But this time it was different, so he took a shortcut: “Saul remained at Gilgal, and all the troops with him were quaking with fear. He waited seven days, the time set by Samuel; but Samuel did not come to Gilgal, and Saul’s men began to scatter. So he said, ‘Bring me the burnt offering and the fellowship offerings.’ And Saul offered up the burnt offering” (1 Samuel 13:7-9).

Samuel arrived in time to see the smoke and smell the burning. The kingship would be taken from Saul’s family and given to another from that day forward.

You want your business to succeed, but God is not blessing it as fast as you want. So you falsify some records and accounts to “speed things up.” You love this man and know you want him forever. He hasn’t proposed, but you invite him into your home to live with you to “speed things up.” Hmm . . .
