7 SECONDS COULD DESTROY YOUR LIFE
It took only seven seconds. University Hall in Charlottesville, Virginia had stood for over fifty years but in seven seconds it was gone. U-Hall as it was known was the home of the University of Virginia basketball teams and housed offices and locker rooms for most of the school’s other sports.
The clam-shell dome roof and everything else in the building was destroyed in just a few seconds. There were 549 pounds of explosives, over 3200 lineal feet of detonating cord, setting up charges in 468 locations around the columns and ring beam that held up the dome.
Once detonated over a dozen explosions could be heard followed by a pause and then another loud set of blasts. The east side of the dome collapsed first. A second or two before the west side came down. The entire demolition lasted seven seconds.
The arena where Ralph Sampson, the only three-time college basketball national player of the year had played his career was destroyed. Many great games, many great moments, many great memories happened at U-Hall but now it was gone.
The demolition was actually an implosion. The building collapsed from within. The reality is the same thing can happen to us in the life we have built. It can be destroyed in just a moment. We can literally implode from within by bad choices or actions.
Ephesians 4:27 tells, “Don’t give the devil a foothold.” A foothold is when a person sticks his shoe at the bottom end of the door so you can't close it. The part of his foot that prevents you from closing the door is a "foothold."
One stupid action, one foolish decision can give the enemy a foothold in your life. And if the enemy can get a foothold in your life it won’t be good. It gives him the opportunity to eventually break into your life. Once he does the result is destruction and it can happen in seconds.
All the good you have done, all the ways you have helped others, all your godly actions can be eviscerated by the seven seconds of sinfulness. It may be hard to hear but it’s true.
Guard your heart from wrong emotions, make honesty your policy, flee from sexual temptation. Resist pride, fight greed, welcome servanthood. Stay close to Jesus and be led by the Holy Spirit.
Don’t allow the enemy to destroy your life.
