34.

"No more shall every man teach his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, 'Know the Lord,' for they all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them, says the LORD. For I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more." - Jeremiah 31:34.

This scripture contains the key to forgiving others. Our heavenly Father says He wills not to remember sin. In other words, His not remembering sin is an act of His will.

The same is true for you. Forgiving others takes an act of your will; it begins with a decision. You first have to will to forgive; then, you have to will not to remember the wrong done to you. This does not mean that what happened to you did not occur, that it was not painful, or that it won’t come back to your mind to try to rob your peace and your joy. But you can overcome the wrong done to you by choosing not to give it any place in your heart or mind. You must will not to entertain thoughts about it, and not to harbor any ill feelings in your heart.

Forgiving others is an act of your will -- not a feeling! Just as your heavenly Father wills to forgive you, you must also be willing to forgive so that your will lines up with His will.
