But they delight in doing everything the LORD wants; day and night they think about his law. - Psalm 1:2

Some people believe you are at the mercy of your feelings. I don’t believe that! I believe you are at the mercy of the Lord, and when you know that, he will give you the very feelings of delight that your heart desires.

Are you looking for happiness? The woman who looks for delight in all the wrong places needs to be told where true happiness lies. According to Psalm 1, the truly happy person delights to think about or meditate on the truth of God.

Delighting in his Word brings a deeper delight, a delight in the Lord himself. The Word, after all, speaks of him. How can you ever get to know God apart from his self-revelation? For many, reading the Bible is a drudgery—a drag. But when you are weary of the words of cynical people, try delighting in his words and see the difference it will make in your life.

Psalm 37:4 tells us: “Take delight in the LORD, and he will give you your heart’s desires.” When our delight is in the Word of the Lord and in the Lord of the Word, it follows quite naturally we will delight to do his will. Speaking prophetically of Jesus, the psalmist wrote, “I take joy in doing your will, my God, for your law is written on my heart” (Psalm 40:8). Jesus would have us say the same.
