Born During Apartheid, She Heard God's Voice as a Child
Born in Rhodesia during apartheid and raised in a Hindu home, Trupti grew up facing racial segregation, and a violent home life. At age 4, she was forgotten at home when her father had a near-fatal suicide attempt. It was then she first clearly heard God’s loving presence call out to her. When 12 years old, she heard a voice tell her she would leave her country and be sent "into the world." Her journey took her from Zimbabwe to London to America, through a painful marriage, and ultimately to a life-changing encounter with Jesus.
“Then she called the name of the Lord who spoke to her, ‘You are a God who sees me.’” Genesis 16:13
In this Parent Compass episode as well, Trupti's children share what it's been like growing up with a mother who survived so much — and how her faith and resilience shaped their family.
In her book, Esther’s Soul: God’s Love for Such a Time as This, available on Amazon, Trupti Desai poetically shares her journey from the dusty floors of an abandoned storefront in Zimbabwe to the stage at the Miss India Pageant and beyond. Heart-warming verse paints an image of overcoming obscurity, rejection, pain, abuse, and other entrapments. And the seeker within, always searching for the one thing, the one Person who can fill the emptiness sings these modern-day Psalms now that she has found a relationship with Jesus.
A Poem by Trupti: releasing her from bondage to freedom in Christ
“If the Son (Jesus Christ) sets you free, you will be free indeed.” John 8:36 NIV
TRAPPED
My life like a bird trapped in a dark cage
No idea of how to be free
Hard to breathe. Cannot move. Stuck
Surviving in the only world I know
God whispers in my ear fly little bird the door is open. You can be free
I look out for a moment. My heart leaps as it envisions a future that could be
But I am scared to leave as the cage comforts me
It is the only world I know. I resist. God persists.
Years of whispers. Tempted by the open door.
I escape the cage for moments, only to be attacked once more.
Back to the cage the place that comforts me
Stuck not free, but the only world I know.
Gods voice calls louder and says little bird be free
How God how? Please stay with me.
It is all an illusion. You are deceived.
My mind transforms and now I see
I trapped myself
Fly bird fly be free.
I leave the cage. My life expands. I can breathe and I am free.
God whispers in my ear be the eagle you were meant to be
Possibilities are endless. A sense of power runs through me. I soar into
the sky and the world discovers the true me.
I once was trapped and now I am free
