How you can move God’s mission forward
And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ.
In the late fall when the weather starts getting colder, it’s not uncommon to see flocks of Canadian geese flying overhead in a V-shaped pattern. I read not long ago that the goose at the front of the “V” is the one working the hardest. He’s taking the wind head-on and creating a draft that helps the geese behind him fly more easily.
The goose at the front, however, doesn’t stay at the front. In fact, throughout the journey, the lead goose will rotate back and another will replace it over and over again. This act ensures the goose doing the most work won’t tire out, and benefits the flock overall by enabling it to fly a greater distance.
Perhaps you’ve heard the statistic that about 20% of people in church today do 80% of the work of the ministry of the church. This is staggering, particularly when you consider that among those 20%, many of them are burning out and giving up because they’re tired of carrying the load.
The church needs to take a lesson from the geese: When everyone plays a part, we all go farther. Don’t let laziness keep you from doing the work of ministry. Get actively involved in the ministry of the church and you’ll help move the mission of God forward!
