THE CHURCH IS THE LIGHTHOUSE
Many times when God speaks He uses physical images or pictures to show us spiritual truth. The picture God gave me was when I was at the beach and it was of a lighthouse.
Lots of people including me like to visit lighthouses. They are always on the water and many times in beautiful places. For years we vacationed as a family on Cape Cod and the town we stayed in had a beautiful lighthouse we would visit often. Lighthouses are nice to look at but that is not their purpose.
A lighthouse is not needed when the sun is shining and the seas are calm. A lighthouse is needed when it is dark and there are storms. And in our culture today it is dark and there are storms. Today in people’s lives it is dark and there are storms. Our neighbors need a lighthouse, our friends need a lighthouse, our co-workers need a lighthouse. The church is the lighthouse!
Jesus said in John 8:12, “I am the light for the world! Follow me and you won’t be walking in the dark. You will have the light that gives life.” Jesus is the light and the church is the lighthouse. We shine the light of Jesus into our community and the world. When people come to Jesus He gives them life - abundant life on this earth and eternal life in heaven.
Lighthouses have amazing light power. Cape Hatteras Lighthouse on the Outer Banks of North Carolina can shine light for twenty miles. It is remarkable that a ship twenty miles away from shore can see the light that will guide them to safety. But the light of Jesus is even more powerful. His light can guide people out of their confusion, out of their denial, out of their hopelessness. Jesus saves lost people and He uses His lighthouse – the Church to do it.
People need the Lord. We know them, we work with them, we live near them and we are related to them. We must invite them to church. We cannot wait for them to come on their own. Today is the day of salvation. The time to bring your friends to church is now. Let other churches transfer in Christians from other churches, let them call that growth when we know the Kingdom of God has not been expanded only rearranged. We will reach the lost, we will shine the light of Jesus. Commit with me to this God ordained, Great Commission fulfilling, Gospel proclaiming vision.
